Elizabeth II, the UK’s longest-serving monarch, died at Balmoral aged 96 after reigning for 70 years. Her family gathered at her Scottish estate after worries grew about her health earlier today.

Concerns grew about her health earlier today, leading to her death at Balmoral at 96. Her death marks the end of an era for the UK, which saw enormous social change during her reign as Queen.

The former Prince of Wales will now lead the country and the Commonwealth as the new King and head of state. Elizabeth II died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon, Buckingham Palace announced.


The King and Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral tonight and return to London tomorrow. All of the Queen’s children went to Balmoral after doctors put her under medical supervision. Prince William is already there, with his brother Prince Harry on his way.

The long life of Queen Elizabeth II was characterised by a dedication to duty. Elizabeth II has governed the UK for over seventy years, starting in 1952 after the Second World War, and ending with the Brexit referendum in 2016.

Elizabeth II was the monarch throughout the reigns of fifteen prime ministers, including Winston Churchill, born in 1874, and Liz Truss, born in 1975 and recently appointed by the Queen.

The Queen held weekly meetings with her prime ministers throughout her reign. Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor was born in Mayfair, London, on April 21, 1926.
